Japan is "the land of the rising sun" (the literal meaning of "Nihon" - 'Japan' in Japanese - is "the origin of the sun") Because Japan is at the eastern edge of Asia, the sun rises there first. The red circle on the white flag represents the rising sun.

The circle in the middle of the flag represents the sun. Japan's name translates to "The land of the rising sun." The white represents honesty and purity and the red disc is a sun symbol meaning brightness, sincerity and warmth.
The current Japanese flag was adopted on August 13, 1999. The symbol in the flag is the state emblem and has been the symbol of Japan for centuries. The Japanese flag initially became the country's national flag in 1868. The Japanese flag was modified slightly by new legislation in 1999. Legend says its origins lie in the days of Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century, when a Buddhist priest offered the sun disc flag to the Emperor of Japan, who was considered a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu.

The Japanese flag

The national Japanese flag is a white rectangular shape with a large red disk in the centre representing the sun. The flag is officially named Nisshōki, but it is commonly known as Hinomaru. In early Japanese history, the hinomaru was used on flags such as daimyos and samurai.

The Japanese national flag is a white rectangle flag with a red circle in the centre. The flag is officially known as Nisshoki (rising sun flag) in Japan, but is more commonly known as Hinomaru, meaning sun circle. Japan is often described as the land of the rising sun, this is because Japan is in the direction of the sunrise and the sun rises over the sea to the East. The circle represents the sun and the colour red meaning bravery, strength and valour. The white background is a symbol of honesty, purity and peace. In 1999, a law was passed to make the Hinomaru Japan's official national flag.

The Japanese flag is white with a red circle at the centre which represents the sun. The white background of the flag represents honesty and purity.
The Japanese flag is known as Hinomaru meaning 'circle of the sun'. They picked a rising sun for the flag because Japan is the easternmost country in the world and the sun rises in the east.

The Japanese flag was officially adopted on February 27, 1870. The national flag of Japan is officially called Nisshoki, meaning sun-mark flag, and is also called Hinomaru in which means "circle of the sun." The flag of Japan features a red circle on a white background.
Japan's flag is a rectangle with a ratio of 2:3, although the original ratio of the flag was 7:10. The Japanese flag is white with a deep red disc in the centre. Japan's location to the east of Asia, from the direction the sun rises, helped Japan earn the nickname, "Land of the Rising Sun." This nickname is reflected in the nation's flag, the sun represented by the red disc.
Japan has been associated with the symbol of the sun since at least the seventh century, and although the exact origin of the flag is not known, most scholars believe it is related to the country's nickname. Other theories include a representation of the sun goddess Amaterasu, from which Japan's Imperial family is said to have descended. A sun flag was used by shogun in the thirteenth century, when the Japanese fought the invasion of the Mongolians.

The Hinomaru was made official in 1870 as a merchant flag, becoming the first national flag adopted in Japan from 1870 to 1885, when the flag became the de facto flag but not the legal flag. The flag's use was heavily restricted during Japan's occupation after World War II until 1947 when the restrictions began to be lifted.

In 1999, a law was passed to make the Hinomaru Japan's official national flag.

Japan’s national flag is called the ‘Hinomaru’. It came to be used as the national flag in the late nineteenth century. The flag depicts the sun; as the sun is the red disc against a white background, some say the white background represents honesty and purity. In early Japanese history the ‘Hinomaru’ motif was used on flags of ‘Daimyos’ and ‘Samurai’.
The earliest record of flags in japan date from the unification period of the late 16 Century. The flag belonged to each ‘Daimyo’ and were used primarily in battle. Most flags were long banners usually charged with the moon (family crest) of the ‘Daimyo Lord’. Members of the same family, such as a son father and brother, had different flags to carry into battle. The flags served as identification, and were displayed by soldiers on their backs and horses. Generals also had their own flags. Most of which differed from soldiers flags due to their square shape.
