The Battle of the Bulge was a major German offensive campaign launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg on the Western Front towards the end of World War II in Europe.

In December 1944, Adolph Hitler attempted to split the Allied armies in northwest Europe by means of a surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp.

Caught off-guard, American units fought desperate battles to stem the German advance at St.-Vith, Elsenborn Ridge, Houffalize and Bastogne.

As the Germans drove deeper into the Ardennes in an attempt to secure vital bridgeheads, the Allied line took on the appearance of a large bulge, giving rise to the battle’s name , The battle of the bulge.

On December 16th,1944 war broke out once again as Adolf Hitler attempted to split the allied armies in northwest and Europe. The battle of the bulge still ranks as the single largest battle thought by the united states.

The Battle of the Bulge was a major German attack on America and England. It was launched in the forested Ardennes. The surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard. The battle also injured Germany's armored forces on the western front which Germany was largely unable to replace. German Luftwaffe aircraft also had heavy losses.

The Battle of the Bulge (December 16 1944-January 16 1945), was the largest battle fought on the Western Front in Europe during World War II; it is also the largest battle ever fought by the United States Army. The Germans code named it: Watch on the Rhine (Wacht am Rhine). The British Prime Minister ,Winston Churchill, later called the victory at the Battle of the Bulge one of the greatest of the war. But that victory came at a tremendous cost, about 19,000 U.S. soldiers died, and 47,500 were wounded and more than 23,000 missing.
